What Is the Montessori Method?

Science has proven Dr. Montessori’s theory that children have the most absorbent minds from ages 0–6. During this time, their capacity to retain information is at its highest.

Based on these facts, a child entering an authentic Montessori environment is nurtured, guided, taught independence, and given the freedom to learn. Our approach helps prepare them to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally throughout their lives and can facilitate a lifelong love of learning.

If you are considering applying to Mosaic Montessori Academy, we encourage you to read more about the Montessori method and our school’s philosophy.

Montessori Method Principles

Our schools foster a culture founded on the principles of the Montessori method, including:

  • Respect for knowledge and the life-long process of acquiring it
  • Respect for self, peers, and teachers
  • Independence
  • Respect for the environment (the one we create and the one we inhabit)
  • Freedom within limits
  • Self-discipline and self-motivation

The Origins of the Montessori Method

Dr. Maria Montessori, the namesake of Montessori education and its creator, began developing the Montessori philosophy in 1897. Maria Montessori was Italy’s first female medical doctor and was notable for that achievement alone, though the Montessori Method would be her lasting legacy.

Maria worked extensively with children who had learning disabilities. From 1896–1906, she was an educator and activist, advocating for new teaching methods and improved education for intellectually challenged students. She often lectured on this and related topics at the University of Rome.

In 1906, Maria opened the Casa dei Bambini—the world’s first “Montessori” school. Her educational philosophies proved popular, and her second school opened in 1907. That success snowballed, with her educational philosophy—the Montessori method—gaining international acclaim and recognition.

Delivering on the Montessori Method

Our classrooms are prepared with a full range of authentic Montessori materials. You will find:

  • Specialized equipment unique to authentic Montessori schools
  • A learning environment prepared to encourage critical thinking and problem-solving with a focus on independence and freedom
  • Staff trained in Montessori educational processes and philosophies
  • A distinctly varied and multicultural environment where students can interact with and learn from each other

Children aged 0–6 have absorbent minds—they can simply learn by being in an environment. This age is referred to as the First Plane of Development. An individualized learning path is created for each student based on their existing development and their displayed aptitudes at this stage.
