Montessori Planes of Development

The Montessori method thrives on an individualized, collaborative, environment-centric approach to education. It encourages children to love learning for life.

The method recognizes 4 distinct planes of development:

  • The First Plane: Environmental Learning / Ages 0–6
  • The Second Plane: Social & Societal Learning / Ages 6–12
  • The Third Plane: Adolescence & Psychological Development / Ages 12–18
  • The Fourth Plane: Cultural & Influential Learning / Ages 18–24+

The planes of development provide an overview of the educational opportunities and advantages students experience at different ages. Understanding these educational planes is imperative in guiding students with the Montessori method.

The First Plane: Environmental Learning / Ages 0–6

At this age, most children learn simply by being in an environment. Children at this age are sensitive to the sensory information they receive when interacting with their environment and its materials and stimuli.

The Montessori method encourages academic development in writing, reading, and mathematics by creating an environment where children are directed toward meaningful tasks.

The Second Plane: Social & Societal Learning / Ages 6–12

Children in this age range complete the initial development of their personality. They have a basic understanding of the “real world” and are ready to engage that world and the community around them. They demonstrate strong desires to work in groups, use their imagination to understand abstract concepts, and work on meaningful tasks.

During this time, students develop their sense of right and wrong, learn more about empathy, and develop their own understanding of compassion, teamwork, and relatability.

The Third Plane: Adolescence & Psychological Development / Ages 12–18

Children undergo significant physical and psychological growth during this period of their lives. During this time, the groundwork is completed for what will become a constructive and contributing adult.

Students develop a strong sense of justice and dignity and often experience challenges in concentration at this stage.sting development and their displayed aptitudes at this stage.

The Fourth Plane: Cultural & Influential Learning / Ages 18–24+

During this time, students embrace the study of culture and natural science. Thought processes and problem-solving skills that have been nurtured over the course of a lifetime are employed by the student to further their understanding of the world and their educational or professional specialization.
